Tragedy as several injured in Embakasi gas explosion

A huge gas explosion in the Embakasi area, Nairobi, is feared to have left several people dead and scores injured.

Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura said the explosion occured at a gas filling Company near Kabansora in Embakasi, Nairobi, minutes to Friday midnight.

He confirmed scores have been injured.

"The company was refilling gas cylinders when the fire broke out and several people were injured and rushed to hospital," Mwaura said.

"The building hosting the company is badly damaged. The cause of the fire remains unknown."

Mwaura advised members of the public to avoid the area as rescue operations are underway.

A multi-agency team comprising the Nairobi County fire brigade, and National Police Service, Kenya Red Cross and E-Plus Ambulances Kenya are leading the efforts to combat the fire.

Kenya Red Cross in an update on its Twitter handle said 100 households have been evicted.

Residents living near the scene of the tragedy are reported to have experienced "tremor-like reactions" immediately after the explosion.

The fire is said to have spread to some nearby houses forcing residents to scamper for safety.

Those injured in the fire tragedy were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, Mama Lucy Hospital and Komarock Medical Centre for treatment.
