Former Kenya National Union of Teachers secretary general Wilson Sossion has said E-government is the way to go and all services are moving to the E platform.
Sossion said the E-citizens fee payment is going to eliminate all the unnecessary levies that are not in the gazetted and approved fee guideline.
"All services have been loaded to the government so that citizens can get services at the comfort of their houses; that is what the Ministry of Information Communication and Technology is doing to ensure that citizens' services are availed at the e-citizen platform," he said.
"Fee payment is one of the services loaded on that platform."
Sossion spoke on Tuesday during an interview with K24.
The former Knut secretary general also asked the government not to roll out new policies in the education sector without consultation and involvement of stakeholders.
He said that policies work better through consultation.
“You can’t rule out a new policy without consultation and involvement of stakeholders. All policies from my expert reading and background are that a policy works better when you originate that policy through consultation,” he said.
Sossion also seconded the government directives that whether a child has paid school fees or not, their studies should not be interfered with.
His remarks come after the Ministry of Education issued a directive mandating parents or guardians with learners in national schools to use the e-Citizen platform for fee payments.
This aligns with the government's initiative to streamline payment processes under the common pay bill number 222222.
To ensure compliance, parents and guardians were directed to make fee payments through the eCitizen platform.
Principals were asked to furnish key financial information to the office of the director general, State Department for Basic Education, by February 6.
The government will subsequently guide the school fee payment process once all bank account details are collected.
