Major political realignments loom large following an unprecedented truce between President William Ruto and Opposition Chief Raila Odinga, the Star can report.

Raila and Ruto paid a joint visit to Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni on Monday catching their bickering political troops off guard.

The meeting, planned for days, had been kept under wraps, except for a few trusted allies, until the last minute.

For the first time after the meeting, Raila recognised Ruto as President.

“I am very grateful to President Museveni for strongly endorsing my candidacy [for the African Union Commission Chair] and to President Ruto for fully backing it,” Raila said on a social media post that triggered heavy political debate.

On Tuesday, the political significance of the Ugandan meeting was evident.

Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa, for instance, met Raila at his Capitol Hill office to build consensus on the two-thirds gender principle.

Separately in Homa Bay, Raila’s troops praised the President for supporting Raila’s bid for the African Union’s top job.
