Three thousand people turned up for the inaugural Wangari Maathai Marathon in commemoration of the environmentalist.
The marathon, themed Power of One took place at Karura Forest on Sunday with an aim to promote change and environmental sustainability.
Wanjira Mathai, Wangari's daughter shared her appreciation to the thousands that took part in the inaugural event.
"It is so heartwarming to see so many people, 3,000 to be precise coming together to celebrate the life and work of a remarkable woman who made a lasting impact on our world. Beyond our wildest dreams," Wanjira said.
The race had four different categories- elite race of 10 km and 21 km for both men and women,2 km for kids, and 5 km race for the family.
The event was organised by Wangari Maathai Foundation and sponsored by NCBA Bank in partnership with the Green Belt Movement and Ken Gen.
"The spirit of unity and community on marathon displayed at Karura was truly inspiring the energy, determination, and persistence. Am grateful for the unwavering support of the sponsors and so many others who exemplify the values that Wangari Maathai stood for conservation, love for the environment and social justice," Wanjira said.
The marathon participants like Faith Nangila took to social media to express their fulfilment after participating in the event.
"Feeling accomplished after crossing the finish line at the marathon. It's not just about the race, but the powerful message it carries, honouring the great legacy of Wangari Maathai and her dedication to environmental conservation and social justice,"Nangila said.
"Today's Africa Environment Day and Wangari Maathai Day. On this day, the Wangari Maathai Foundation inaugurated the Wangari Maathai and I had the chance to compete in the 21 km race,"Ohaga another participant said.
“Today's run through Karura Forest symbolises our commitment to environmental sustainability. The Wangari Maathai Marathon unites us in the spirit of Prof. Wangari Maathai, championing a greener and more just world,” Darsil said.
Wangari Maathai Day is commemorated every March 3 in honour of the Maathai's legacy and to promote her vision of a greener and more sustainable world.
The Green Belt Movement to which she was a pioneer, has planted more than 50 million trees in Kenya and inspired similar initiatives in other parts of the world.
