Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has assured parents that Nairobi's Dishi na County program will not be scrapped.

His assurance comes even as the government plans to do away with the National school feeding program.

The Nairobi Governor said parents and children should have nothing to worry about.

"Nairobi parents and children should not worry. Dishi na County school feeding Program remains on," Sakaja said.

The program, which was started soon after he became governor produces close to 200,000 meals per day.

The governor said this is against an enrolment of 360,000 children.

The National Treasury has proposed to do away with the National school feeding program in the 2024/2025 financial year's proposed budget.

Speaking when he appeared before the National Assembly Education Committee to defend the budget, Basic Education PS Belio Kipsang said while the Treasury wants it scrapped, it has been essential for the success of school-going children.

He insisted that it is important the meal program is retained

"The biggest challenge we are facing is that the whole budget has been removed, those of us who take three meals a day might not know the feeling of what happens when a child does not have a meal in certain parts of this country," Kipsang said.

"We have to appreciate that the school feeding programme is essential to the success of the students, that it is very important to making sure that every kid gets education."

The PS also appealed for reinstatement of the school feeding budget.

He noted that there are over 2 million children out of school and the biggest contributor to this is lack of food.

Kipsang said the program has been scrapped even though he requested for additional funding from the initial Sh4.9 billion allocated in this financial year.
