Kenyans living in the US were on Monday treated to a light moment after President William Ruto cut short a woman directing a question to him.

Ruto who was on a state visit to the US had to interject the woman saying her flow of English was too first for him to understand what she was saying.

"Excuse me madam, Your English is a bit (laughs)...Can you maybe try Swahili?" he asked.

"Ama kidogo upunguze the tweng, imenipita kidogo. I'm sorry (Or you can reduce the tweng (the typical sound of the speech of people from a certain place))."

The woman went on to speak slowly, at some point asking "Is that slow enough?" amidst laughter.

When she was done with her question, the President had to ask for clarification saying, "I had to get translation, I now know what you want".

Ruto met with Kenyans living in the US at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta, on the first day of his State Visit to America.

He went on to state that Kenya has a programme on electricity and last-mile connectivity, one that has been worked on for the last 10 years.

He went on to state that as of 2024, there are 10 million households connected to electricity in the country.

"In our budget this year, we have set aside Sh12 billion that is going towards the programme of last mile connectivity," he said.

He then apologised for not understanding the woman on the first go.

"Forgive me if I didn't understand you. Kiingereza yako ndio imenichanganya kidogo lakini ni sawa (Your English confused me a bit but it's okay)," Ruto said.
