Kwa Munyenze Dam where three girls drowned at Koma area in Kathiani, Machakos County on May 21, 2024.

Three school-going children died on Tuesday after they drowned in a dam in Kathiani, Machakos county.

The girls drowned in the Kwa Munyenze Dam in Koma Kathiani subcounty Tuesday evening.

The young girls are said to have been washing clothes at the dam when they tragically met their deaths.

One was a Form 1 student, a Grade 6 pupil and Grade 3 pupil.

Their bodies were retrieved after being found in the dam.

Kinyau assistant ahief Juliana Katumbi confirmed the incident and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the young lives.

Katumbi said the Form 1 girl was a student at Kinyui Girls High School while the others were learners at a local primary school.

She said the girls' deaths are a mystery to the community.

"The sequence of events is still a mystery," Katumbi said.

"However, it is suspected that one child may have drowned initially and the others died while attempting to save her," she added.

To avert such tragedies, the administrator advised parents against sending their children to dams unattended warning that dams are at this time full of rain water.

"I don't know if these three were sent by their parents or not. There was a boy who did not enter the dam and was found safe in the area," she said.

"I urge parents to be careful and remember that the rains may have gone but water bodies are full of rain water and this may pose danger to our kids," Katumbi said.

Locals helped in retrieving the bodies before they were moved by police to a mortuary.
