President William Ruto has today spoken about the budget process saying he called the heads of parastatals and explained to them the current situation in the country.
He said he informed them that each of them was required to reduce their budgets, especially on the recurrent expenditure by 30 per cent.
Ruto was speaking on Thursday when he attended the National Prayer Breakfast at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi.
"I was pleasantly surprised that every parastatal was willing to contribute to making sure that we live within our means. They went back and have submitted their reports and reduced their recurrent budgets by 30 per cent," he said.
President Ruto said that is also the reason why his office and that of the Deputy President as well as the Prime Cabinet Secretary have decided that they must lead from the front and tighten up their belts.
He said they are going to invest in the places that will make sure they create broader prosperity.
"We are going to invest in making sure our dairy is working, flowers, coffee, tea and the places that create opportunity for the majority of Kenyans.
He, therefore, said that as a steward he will act responsibly and manage the affairs of the country with integrity and selflessness.
This he said is to achieve a nation of hope.
Ruto further said because the country is going through a budget process and they have stabilised the economy, they are now going to focus on how to create jobs.
"We are going to put more resources and make sure that the road network that was destroyed by the floods is repaired and even complete the roads that are awaiting depletion," he said.
He further added that being a responsible steward, there is no way he could have spent a huge amount of money on his US trip.
"When I saw the debate concerning how I travelled to the US, people came up with all manner of figures even saying that it might have cost Sh200 million because the president needed to arrive in style holding Mama Rachel's hand. Allow me to disclose that it cost us less than Sh10 million because I am not a madman," President Ruto said.
