A 19-year-old student who allegedly assaulted a police officer along Kamiti Road and robbed him of a communication gadget was manhandled by police, the court has heard.

Ian Njoroge who appeared before Milimani Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi on Tuesday was arrested hours later in Kayole, Nairobi.

"The officer who is the complainant in this case manhandled the accused inside his car," Defence lawyer Duncan Okatch told the court.

Further, Okatch told the court that the officers who arrested the accused in his mother's house manhandled him and he fainted two times.

At the police station, the lawyer told court that the officers beat him and the clothes he had, had blood stains.

"The officers took photos. He is young and still innocent. Please grant him bail," he told the court.

The court heard that the officers confiscated his mobile phone and his student ID.

"They should be returned. The police should not treat the accused as a dog," said defence lawyer Lempaa Soyinka.

"He was escorted in court by 21 police officers. We will be requesting documentary evidence and CCTV footage."
