Former police spokesman Jasper Ombati Nyauma is the new Rift Valley Regional police commander following changes announced on Friday.

Ombati replaces Tom Odero who has been recalled to police headquarters in Nairobi.

The changes were announced by Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome.

Ombati had been serving at the Italian United Nations office as a senior adviser before he came back from the mission in February this year.

He was then posted to Kenya Railways and Port Police as the commandant.

Allan Sangoro who has been at the UN office in Ethiopia was posted at the Kenya Railways and Port Police to succeed Ombati.

Odero has been serving as the Rift Valley regional commander since March 2022, playing a lead role in the war against banditry.

He has managed to lead the multi-agency team in the area to contain the menace in most of the affected areas.

Some areas however remain unstable after repeated attacks from the bandits amid ongoing security operations.

Ombati was deployed to the region amid ongoing operations on the bandits and other forms of crime in general.

He has served in various capacities in the service and gained experience which many believe will help him steer the operations in the troubled region.
