Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has appealed for calm from Kware residents in Mukuru Kwa Njenga even as the retrieval of bodies continued.

In a statement to newsrooms, Sakaja also called for restraint from police.

"Regrettably, we have witnessed instances of altercations between the residents and government officials, which have hampered rescue efforts after police lobbed tear gas into the crowd," he said.

"We urge the DCI to avail all resources in investigating the circumstances behind these heinous deaths. Kenyans want answers and need to feel safe always."

Sakaja assured residents that the county is committed to offering the necessary support to the deceased's families and the residents of Kware Ward.

"In as much as this is a homicide matter and a police case, we are working closely with the National Police and other relevant authorities during the investigations and identification of the deceased," Sakaja said.

"I urge the community to remain patient and supportive as authorities work tirelessly to bring closure to this tragic situation."

The county government also confirmed that the City Mortuary has received eight bodies and twelve body parts from Kware in Mukuru slums.

Sakaja said the bodies had been received even as retrieval efforts continued.

"The tragic discovery has sent shockwaves in Nairobi," he said.

"We have so far received eight bodies and 12 body parts."

The governor said they recognise and applaud the young people of Kware who went out of their way and took the lead in the retrieval efforts.

He said their industry and bravery will not go unrewarded.

"We have mobilized our resources to help the families of the victims once they are identified, including providing psychological support and counselling at the funeral home," Governor Sakaja stated.

The governor emphasized that the county disaster management team is actively working with and supporting the affected families alongside other government authorities.

He also appealed for calm as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) continues its probe to identify those responsible for these heinous acts.

Governor Sakaja further assured that the county would provide ongoing support and keep the families informed with timely updates.

"To the affected families and friends, poleni sana. We stand with you and will give you all the support available," Sakaja said.
