Interior Cabinet Secretary nominee Kithure Kindiki answers questions during vetting in Parliament on August 1, 2024.

Interior Cabinet Secretary nominee Kindiki Kithure has outlined five key areas the ministry will prioritise following the recent budget cuts after rejection of the Finance Bill, 2024.

Kindiki said these programmes are considered as the biggest national security threats hence the need to allocate adequate funding.

These are terror threats, organised crimes, control of narcotic drugs, the fight against climate change and extremism in its various forms.

“We are going to consider these national security threats in our programming,” he submitted.

On the delayed recruitment, Kindiki failed to provide any explanation only giving an undertaking that they will strive to ensure all slots are fully accounted for.

He was responding to a question from a member on measures in place to stop rampant cases of corruption in the service during the nationwide recruitment exercises.

He acknowledged that in the past there have been many claims of corruption and favoritism.

“Going forward, we are going to demand from police account for every slot that they are filled,” he said.

Kindiki was the first to appear before the Committee on Appointments chaired by Moses Wetang'ula.

At least four other nominees are set to be vetted on Thursday.
