EDITORIAL

The recent abduction of five chiefs in northern Kenya by the Somali terror group al Shabaab is a stark reminder of the persistent threat our nation faces.

These chiefs, who serve as vital links between the government and local communities, were taken just a day before President Ruto commenced his five-day tour of the region.

Their abduction not only instils fear but also disrupts the essential governance and security efforts in these areas.

President Ruto’s stern warning to the abductors that the government will spare no effort in securing their release is commendable, yet we urge swift and decisive action to ensure their safe return.

Al Shabaab has a notorious history of abducting Kenyans, including a Cuban foreign doctor whose fate remains uncertain.

Such incidents highlight the growing audacity of the terrorists and the need for a robust response.

We call on the government to mobilise all necessary resources, including intelligence and security forces, to rescue the chiefs.

The safety of these individuals is paramount, and their return will send a clear message that Kenya stands united against terror.
