Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has disowned the embarassing statues erected in Eldoret town ahead of its elevation to city status.

The poorly curved graven images sparked public outrage especially on social media prompting the county government to pull them down.

Bii said the statues were not done by the county government but by well wishers who promised to unveil good monuments as part of their welcoming of the city status.

The governor said the county did not have a budget but well wishers pledged to adopt the streets and roundabouts in the town to put up the statues for beautification.

"The well wishers had promised to deliver surprise statues and unveil them on the evening before the elevation to city status but as we waited we were shocked with what was unveiled,” Bii said.

He was speaking at a church function in Eldoret on Sunday, August 18.

The poorly crafted sculptures were unveiled a day before President Ruto presided over the elevation of Eldoret town to a city on Thursday, August 15, 2024.

Bii said the county was not in any way to blame for the poorly dome statues some of which he said "looked like Satan”.

He said the statues were to be images of 1500m Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon.

“What was unveiled was shocking. One side looked like a human being and the other side looked like Satan himself,” Bii said.

The governor said he was sorry for what happened but insisted that the county was not to blame.
