70 TVETs to benefit from Sh13bn equipment

The initiative is under government-to-government arrangement

Seventy Technical, Vocational Education and Training institutions are set to benefit from China equipment worth Sh13 billion.

The initiative is under government-to-government arrangement on equipping the TVET sector.

PS state department for Technical, Vocational Education and Training  Esther Muoria said Kenya-China project of equipping the institutions is timely.

It comes at a time when the sector is embracing the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The PS said for the sector to fully leverage on 4IR, there is a dire need to have modern equipment.

She said with the modernisation of the curriculum to Competency-Based Education and Training, time is ripe to have the modern equipment so that learners are trained in line with what the market expects.

Muoria said the equipping of the 70 institutions is being undertaken on a Sh13 billion loan. 

The PS said the equipment is of high technology, and that they incorporated advanced technologies into training facilities such as Virtual Reality and Augmented  Reality.

This will help trainees gain cutting-edge skills that are highly demanded in the global labour market. It will help them to compete favourably in the labour market.

The equipment will be supplied in the following departments; mechanical technology, electrical and electronic technology, agricultural machinery technology, mechatronics technology and agricultural value addition technology.

Others are civil and building technology, welding and fabrication technology, hospitality management technology, automotive technology and refrigeration and air conditioning technology.

Muoria lauded the government for its continued support for TVET. She said currently, there are 240 institutions in Kenya, and that each constituency boasts of one.

She called on the youth to join TVET saying it has been able to break down different training programmes into a skill-set that allows one to gain skills for a short time to start earning.

The PS said with the Kenya Credit Accumulation and Transfer System, the youth will move seamlessly in their quest to gain skills in TVET.
