Detectives are investigating the murder of a 23-year-old woman whose body was found in her house in the Biafra area, Thika, Kiambu County.
The killing of 23-year-old Seth Nyakio Njeri is the latest brutal manifestation of extreme violence against women in the country, police said.
Njeri is believed to have been killed on Monday, October 14 or Sunday, October 13 night by an unknown assailant.
Detectives are pursuing the matter.
Her distraught relatives say the Zetech University graduate left their home in Kamakis on Saturday in a jovial mood.
Her mother, Lucy Njeri, a nominated Member of the County Assembly (MCA) in Kirinyaga County said her only daughter was in high spirits on the fateful day.
"Had I known that was the last time she was to be with me alive, I would have dissuaded her from going. But there was no instinct to warn me that my beloved daughter was heading to a painful death," she said.
She claimed security agencies are not taking the matter seriously even after completing their autopsy.
“We can see
a person supposed to be a suspect loitering here at the station and none is
explaining what is happening," she said.
The MCA said she is devastated by her daughter's cruel death, and the slow pace of investigations by the police is making things worse.
"She had just graduated from a tertiary college in Thika town and was job hunting. She had friends in Thika town whom she visited occasionally," she said.
"My daughter told me she would be visiting a friend in Biafra estate, Thika, but would keep in touch should the need arise for her to spend the night away,” she said.
She said she had talked to her father on Sunday night but thereafter efforts to reach him later bore no fruits.
The family said her calls and texts were not responded to.
This prompted the parents to start the search for the woman which ended in her house where the body was discovered.
On Monday morning, the family received a strange phone call from her friend who informed them the student was dead.
Police were notified, only to find the naked lifeless body of the woman in the house.
Preliminary investigation revealed she had been strangled.
Police say the assailant sexually abused the deceased before probably killing her.
Investigators have zeroed in on a male friend who was aggrieved after the two separated.
It is suspected that the boyfriend got wind of the whereabouts of the girl, seduced her and ended up killing her, police said.
But police say they are yet to establish the motive and those behind the same.
The detectives handling the matter have recorded statements from the woman’s friends as part of the probe into the murder.
Several women have been killed in a series of incidents that have left many fearing they are targeted.
Police say some of the cases have been solved after suspects were arrested while others are under probe.
