  • President Ruto's allies believe Gachagua has no fighting chance in court
  • The UDA constitution states that the deputy president shall be the deputy party leader

Top officials of the UDA party have hatched a plan to kick out impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as deputy party leader.

President William Ruto is the UDA party leader.

The UDA constitution states that the deputy president shall be the party's deputy leader.

There had been plans to expand the UDA leadership, with two more deputy party leader positions proposed to be created.

It is not clear if the plan, which reportedly targeted to clip Gachagua's wings, will proceed following the latest political developments.

Following Gachagua's removal from office, UDA top honchos have planned to replace him as deputy party leader in the next two weeks.

They hope that once the ongoing court process where Gachagua has challenged his impeachment is over and his removal is upheld, they will proceed and oust him from UDA.

The plotters want Gachagua expelled from the UDA party altogether should his impeachment be affirmed by the High Court.

It has emerged that President Ruto's allies want to install Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki the UDA deputy party leader.

Kindiki was nominated by President Ruto to replace Gachagua as deputy president but he is yet to take the oath of office following a court order.

However, Ruto's allies believe that even if Gachagua is reinstated as DP, his relationship with the president is irretrievably broken and his position as deputy party leader untenable.

They also do not see any chance of securing a lifeline in court.

The Star has established that UDA is planning to convene a National Executive Council meeting within 14 days to ratify Gachagua's removal from office as deputy party leader.

The NEC meeting will also initiate the process of expelling Gachagua from the UDA party following internally laid down procedures.

The expulsion would also open another protracted legal battle with Gachagua if he chooses to fight on to remain a UDA member despite his removal from office as DP and deputy party leader.

Should Gachagua be successfully kicked out from UDA as a member and cleared by the courts, he is unlikely to seek any political seat in 2027 on the party's ticket.

"We do not recognise Gachagua as the UDA deputy party leader,'' stated UDA National Treasurer Japhet Nyakundi.

The Kitutu Chache North MP said that UDA will soon hold a NEC meeting to pick Gachagua's replacement.

"The NEC will soon convene and instal a new deputy party leader to take the place of Gachagua,'' Nyakundi said.

Gachagua has been a high-ranking UDA leader and has been charging crucial meetings in President Ruto's absence including the National Steering Committee.

Former UDA secretary general Cleophas Malala, a key ally of Gachagua, was ousted from his position as President Ruto's allies plotted to take charge of the party.

Malala was perceived to be so close to Gachagua that his stay at the helm of the UDA party was considered untenable as Ruto's men schemed how to kick out the impeached DP.

Malala was replaced by East African Community Legislative Assembly member Hassan Omar but later moved to court to challenge the removal from office.

There are reports President Ruto's decision to work with former prime minister Raila Odinga under the broad-based government could birth a new alliance ahead of the 2027 polls.

Following his fallout with Gachagua, Ruto picked into the Cabinet some five politicians allied to Raila.

The partnership was crucial in securing numbers that helped impeach Gachagua.
