Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson will host reggae icon Burning Spear at Uhuru Park on Saturday, November 2, 2024, as part of the artist’s One People Africa Tour.
The concert is organized in partnership with the popular reggae group Dohty Family.
With hits like Marcus Garvey and Slavery Days, Burning Spear has captivated generations with his music advocating African unity and justice.
His performance at Uhuru Park is expected to draw thousands of fans, owing to his legendary musical compositions that have won hearts.
Governor Sakaja in a statement ahead of the event said it would be an opportunity an opportunity to establish Uhuru Park as a central venue for cultural gatherings and public festivities.
“This is more than just a concert; it’s a celebration of Nairobi’s rich heritage and a symbol of our commitment to restoring the city’s public spaces,” said Sakaja.
The entertaining concert is set to give Nairobians and visitors an immersive day of live reggae music, unity, and celebration.
It will mark the first major event at the park since its extensive renovation.
The concert is set to start from 12 noon to 6 pm. The entry is free for all who will want to take part in it.
Sakaja noted that hosting Burning Spear, known for his timeless messages of unity and resilience, was an ideal way to commemorate the landmark occasion.
The revamped Uhuru Park now boasts a modern, safe, and beautifully landscaped setting designed to host a variety of events, from concerts to festivals, catering to families, youth, and tourists alike.
After months of refurbishment, the Nairobi County government seeks to ensure the park becomes a vibrant cultural hub.
Burning Spear, whose real name is Winston Rodney OD, is a Jamaican-roots reggae singer-songwriter, vocalist, and musician.
Burning Spear is a Rastafarian and one of the most
influential and long-standing roots artists to emerge from the 1970s.
