Tension is high in Kapsabet town Nandi County after police cancelled a planned demonstration by a section of residents over alleged graft.
The demos were aimed at forcing MCAs to adopt an Ad-hoc committee report on alleged corruption in the county.
The report is to be tabled at the assembly today.
A section of residents led by Cornelius Rugut had notified police in the area of planned citizen assembly and picketing in Kapsabet town on Tuesday and Wednesday.
However, police have cancelled the protests citing security over the ongoing KCSE exams.
“The aim of our picketing is to show solidarity and support for the Ad-hoc committee report scheduled to be tabled and debated upon within the next three days as listed in our notice,” the notification filed by Rugut read in part.
The residents want to put pressure on Governor Stephen Sang to sack corrupt officers in his administration after the report is adopted.
The notification had been copied to the OCS Kapsabet Robert Githinji and all other top security officers in the county.
In cancelling the picketing the OCS also noted that police were not in a position to provide adequate security due to deployments for the ongoing Form Four exams.
“Intelligence reports indicate that there is a strong likelihood of occurrence of violence due to effects of infiltration and divergent views,” a police communication said.
The report is expected to have far-reaching recommendations with indications that seven senior officials of the Nandi County government may face the axe as part of recommendations by an ad-hoc committee of MCAs formed to investigate the allegations of graft and incompetence against the county executive.
The Star has established that not less than three top executives otherwise known as county ministers have been recommended for removal from office along with four chief officers in the administration of governor Stephen Sang.
A section of residents want all MCAs to fully support the report and force the removal of all those mentioned negatively.
The ad-hoc committee chaired by Kapsabet Town MCA Benjamin Kerich had finalised its report amid claims that there were attempts by some of those targeted to interfere with the final report through bribery and coercion.
“We have finalised our report and we are tabling it at the assembly as it is. No need for too much speculation instead let’s wait and see,” Kerich said.
Matata said the committee had done its work as mandated by MCAs and the findings would be as per the actual work done by his team.
The residents who say they are angered by alleged graft in the county want to stage a siege at the county assembly to force the MCAs to immediately impeach those negatively named in the report.
