The weatherman has issued a heavy rains advisory on Thursday in parts of Central Rift Valley, including Nairobi and southeast lowlands.

Kenya Meteorological Department Director David Gikungu said the rainfall of more than 20mm is expected within 24 hours from its onset on Thursday.

“The rainfall is likely to intensify to more than 30mm in 24hrs on Friday, November 15, 2024, over Southeastern lowlands and central parts including the Nairobi area. It is projected to reduce in intensity from November 16, 2024, over most parts of the country,” he said.

Counties to be affected are Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Isiolo, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, Narok, parts of Kajiado,, Nairobi, Machakos, Kitui and Makueni.

“Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential flash floods,” Gikungu said.

He said those living downstream of rivers or along seasonal rivers should be careful since water may appear suddenly even though it may not be raining within the area.

Gikungu further advised against driving through or walking in moving water or open fields.

To minimise exposure to lighting strikes, he said people should avoid sheltering under trees and near grilled windows whenever it’s raining.

“People in landslide-prone areas especially over the slopes of the Aberdare ranges, Mt Kenya and other hilly areas should be vigilant,” he added.

The weatherman said further updates will be issued in the event that there will be a change of weather during the forecast period.

This is the first heavy rains advisory to be issued this year by the met department.

In an earlier update issued Wednesday, the meteorological department said parts of Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Central Kenya, Nairobi as well as northeastern and South Eastern Lowlands would experience light to moderate rainfall.

It added that isolated storms and heavy rainfall of more than 20mm in 24 hours are likely in some areas.
