The Star has been receiving nominations for Kenyans or leaders whose efforts this year have influenced activities or events that have changed lives.
Since 2018, the paper has been running the award, recognising personalities whose work has had a positive impact on their communities or the nation.
The winner of the prestigious “Star Person of the Year” will be unveiled in December, days before Christmas.
Four broad guidelines will help in settling on the eventual winner, the awards’ committee chaperoning the fete says.
The nominee must be engaged in activities to make Kenya or their community a better place to live and work.
They must also have inspired or helped fellow citizens, inventing a solution that has dramatically changed lives and has the qualities of honesty and integrity.
The paper’s political editor, Felix Olick, who also chairs the award’s committee, rallied Kenyans to nominate the best.
This year has been eventful, with happenings heralding huge impacts for the country and that the people behind these events make good candidates for recognition.
“2024 has been unprecedented in many ways in Kenya’s history. From the Gen Z protests that nearly brought the country to its knees, to the flooding that wreaked havoc throughout the country, a lot has happened in 11 months. However, despite the many challenges, there are valiant men and women in different spheres who have made a difference in the lives of other Kenyans,” he said.
“We are asking the public to nomi nate such individuals for recognition. They may not be known beyond their communities but the impact of their work stands out,” Olick added.
Star news editor, Jillo Kadida, said the award is intended to celebrate people who put extra effort to bring positive change to their communities and hence will encourage them to do more in the coming year.
“[The award] is our way of celebrating the heroes among us who go above and beyond in changing lives of people, whether in philanthropy, in coming up with innovations that bring about change, or people in governance who fight for what’s right, just and serve with integrity,” she said.
Previous winners include ast year’s recipient, Faith Kipyegon and 2022 winner National Cohesion and Integration Commission’s Wambui Nyutu.
“Those people deserve to be celebrated and seen and that’s what in our own small way we intend to achieve with this award.”
Last year’s recipient, Faith Kipyegon, was feted for bringing honour
to Kenya, thrusting the country into
the global spotlight and becoming
a big inspiration to the young and
not so young.
