As thousands of citizens gathered to take part in the Ndukuma Earthdam Run in Makueni, Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr urged residents to safeguard all water projects that the County and well-wishers have constructed.

The Governor said water is key for human survival and as such, should be used well and its infrastructure protected.

"I'm grateful that this community has protected this dam even though it has no fence and that no incidents have been reported. I urge the rest of the people across the County to ensure maximum security to existing water projects and new ones," noted the Governor in the Sunday event.

He reiterated that the water held by the dam is of high value saying it will help execute modern farming for any interested resident in order to uplift the living standards of locals.

"This will not only be a dam but an enterprise for the residents surrounding this area," added the Governor.

According to Governor Mutula, some of the youths have already approached the Water department to secure permits to engage in fish farming.

Through the Department of Sports and Athletics Kenya, the dam has also been listed among the other dams where runners will be able to race annually.

This dam is among the four great dams in the County including the Thwake and Kyamakuthi dams in Kalawa, and the Uyi dam in Kasikeu among others.

People along the water pathway were also requested to peacefully allow water to flow downstream for the benefit of the rest.

The County has scheduled to start up a water purification mechanism at the dam in December and supply it to 16 villages that nears the dam as a way of sorting water shortage within the region.

"All stakeholders involved in the maintenance of Ndukuma Conservancy are ready to walk with the County in ensuring this water is made available at all times," said Mutula.

Tekla Lorupe a World Winner in Athletics present in the Run was lauded for giving hope to the young running champions Countrywide.
