In Summary
Police have released a photo of a man they claim is a key suspect in the murder of a 23-year-old woman in Thika, Seth Nyakio Njeri.
Detectives at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations urged the public to volunteer details that would aid in the arrest of the suspect identified as Ken Kimathi Gichunuku alias Sultan.
The DCI said the suspect is wanted for questioning to disclose more information about the incident. DCI also said the suspect has other pending criminal court cases.
Njeri's body was discovered in her friend’s house on October 14, 2024, at Blessing Building in Biafra Estate, Thika Township.
On October 17, 2024, a post-mortem was conducted by the Government Pathologist, in the presence of the family pathologist, family lawyer and family members, who attributed the death to Asphyxia due to manual strangulation and smothering. The matter is under investigation by the Homicide department at DCI.
The murder of the woman has intensified a debate over claims that women are being specifically targeted for killing.
Police have denied these allegations, stating that no gender is singled out in such crimes, as murder is treated as a criminal act punishable equally.
In the past three months, over 400 people have been killed, around 100 of whom were women.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja reported that in most cases, police have investigated thoroughly, identified suspects, and brought them to court, though some cases remain unsolved.
"To address these issues, a specialized Missing Persons Unit has been established at the DCI, and Gender Desks at police stations nationwide are on high alert to address any incidents of gender-based violence swiftly," Kanja said.
