During the week, Wetang’ula took over the leadership of the Bureau of EAC Speakers from the outgoing chairperson, Ackson Tulia.

Tulia is the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Tanzania.

Wetang’ula took over the leadership during the 18th Meeting of the Bureau of EAC Speakers held in Nairobi.

The Bureau of EAC Speakers, established in 2008, has been instrumental in fostering a strong working relationship between national legislatures and the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

“Our bureau acts as the legislative backbone of the EAC integration agenda, providing a platform where we, as Speakers, can align our national interests with our collective aspirations,” Ackson said.

Wetang’ula reaffirmed Kenya’s unwavering commitment to the EAC integration agenda.

“Our Parliament is ready to work closely with our counterparts to advance these shared priorities and realise the vision of a prosperous, peaceful, and united East Africa,” he added.

“Our meeting today is more than just a routine Assembly. It is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to the ideals of the East African Community. Let us draw inspiration from our past, our shared heritage, and our collective aspirations to build a future that is inclusive, prosperous, and peaceful for all our people,” he said.

Meanwhile, preparations are in top gear for the 14th East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games, scheduled to take place in the historic Coastal City of Mombasa from December 6-17, 2024.

Kenya's National Assembly Deputy Clerk Jeremiah Ndombi led a team to assess the preparedness of Mombasa to host the championship

"Having assessed the level of preparedness to host the games by the Kenyan Parliament, the Committee is satisfied," his team report reads in part.
