A prison warden in Bungoma Town was on Sunday after a botched robbery with violence incident.

The warden is said to have been in the company of four other men when they allegedly attempted to block a female motorist along the KCC area, police said.

The suspected carjackers were on a motorcycle when they allegedly tried to block the motorist at about 6 pm.

An alarm was raised alerting locals who rushed to the woman’s rescue.

This prompted the four men to escape amid a chase from the mob.

One of them was nabbed and frog-marched to Bungoma Police Station where it was discovered he was a serving warden at the local prison facility.

The motorcycle was also detained as an exhibit in the probe.

The suspect told police he was not among the said carjackers and that he was just a pillion passenger.

Police said they will investigate to establish if he was involved in the incident.

Meanwhile, police in Endebess, Trans Nzoia County recovered a G3 rifle loaded with 14 bullets following a shooting incident in the area on Sunday.

The weapon was recovered from a culvert along Matisi-Endebess road following an intelligence-led operation.

The man who had the weapon is missing and efforts to trace him are ongoing, police said.

He is believed to have been involved in an earlier robbery with violence incident in the area on Sunday morning during which he shot into the air as he escaped.

A team has been sent to the area to pursue the suspect, police said.

The weapon was taken for ballistic tests to establish if it has been used in any other crimes, police said.

The area has been experiencing a rise in crime amid police operations to address the situation.

Elsewhere in Makueni, officials from the Kenya Revenue Authority have joined multi-agency teams in investigating the recovery of illegal ethanol that was intercepted in the area.

The dumped ethanol was headed for Nairobi when it was intercepted by police.

KRA officials installed seals on the cargo as part of the probe into the seizure.

The chemical is used in manufacturing alcoholic drinks.
