President William Ruto has affirmed that his administration has not been watching helplessly as Kenyans go through tough economic times.

In his State of the Nation Address, Ruto said his administration has been putting in place measures to lessen the economic burden facing Kenyans.

“We have not been watching helplessly and doing nothing as adversity took a toll on the economy and undermined the livelihood and well-being of the people,” he stated.

He added that his administration has been working tirelessly to steer the country away from the brink of unprecedented economic collapse and to a more promising trajectory.

“While we are not where would like to be, we are certainly not where we were two and a half years ago. The cost of living was too high and the cost of basic commodities way beyond the reach of many Kenyans,” he stated.

The President noted that many struggling Kenyans impatiently wonder when real money get into their pocket and the jobs promised will become a reality.

“It is undeniable that for many Kenyans, times are hard and the struggle to meet their basic needs remains daunting. It is also true that these conditions have persisted for a number of years now  leading to much frustration and anxiety.”

He said the Kenya Kwanza administration was inaugurated at an extremely difficult time characterised by domestic challenges compounded by local and global security, geo-political financial and climate dynamics.

Last year, Ruto enumerated the steps his administration had taken to address the three critical areas of national security, international obligations and realisation of national values.

In his address last September, the President stressed his pet subject, the Affordable Housing project.

He also discussed the transformation of the education sector, Universal Health Coverage (UHC), the digitisation of government services and the transformation of the security sector, among others.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula on Wednesday noted that lawmakers will be given an opportunity from Monday afternoon to debate the address of His Excellency.
