The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce (KNCCI) has expressed its commitment to supporting the youth explore opportunities in the mining sector.
KNCCI president Eric Rutto highlighted the significant potential of the industry in creating employment and fostering growth.
Calling for support from all relevant stakeholders, Rutto disclosed that they are currently seeking for partners to help provide equipment and finances to support the youth in extractives.
This is addition to having a $100 million (Sh13 billion) youth mining fund established.
"Your commitment to empowering and supporting our youth in their journey is invaluable. Together we are creating a better future not only for those involved directly in mining but entire country," Rutto said in a statement read on his behalf by Chamber's youth director Irene Kirimi.
She was speaking during the inaugural Youth in Extractives Consortium (YEC) conference held at KCA university in Nairobi.
According to Rutto, the fund will provide essential equipment to about 2 million youth organised in various groups across the country.
On his part, KNCCI's Mining and Blue Economy chairperson Charles Komen said they aim to be the voice of reason in addressing challenges, driving change, and creating opportunities for the youth.
"By advocating for sustainable practices and innovative solutions, we can turn this sector into a force for positive development and job creation," he stated.
Komen added that they seeking to develop various programs that align with its goals and work with relevant partners to ensure the success of these initiatives
"As part of our future plans, YEC will focus on empowering the youth through training, mentorship, and collaboration," he said.
"We aim to foster innovation and sustainability in the extractives sector by creating opportunities for young professionals to engage in meaningful projects."
YEC outlook represents a broader scope within the industry, covering exploration and extraction to processing and distribution.
YEC president Joshua Tiampati said their goal is to ensure that while they meet the high demand for critical materials, they also address the environmental and social impacts, creating opportunities.
