A man believed to be a gun trafficker was shot and wounded
in a confrontation with police in Lodwar Town, Turkana County.
Police said they had on November 24 been tipped the suspect was within the area with a gun he wanted to sell to a potential buyer in Meru.
Police laid an ambush on the Lodwar-Kitale Highway and arrested three suspects as they were headed for Meru to deliver the weapon.
According to police, the suspects became violent, prompting the officers to fire warning shots into the air.
After ignoring these warnings, one of the officers shot an armed suspect with a knife in the left knee injuring him.
The team also recovered a Turkish-made EKOL P.29 pistol and a magazine loaded with five rounds of .22mm ammunition.
The suspects were arrested pending arraignment.
Police say they have been detecting illegal possession of guns in the country and were investigating the source of the same.
Illegal guns have been blamed for violent crimes in several parts of the country.
This has prompted police operations to address the menace.

Meanwhile, police are looking for a gang that raided a church in Kayole and stole electronic goods.
This was after they had attacked and wounded a guard on duty at the facility on Sunday morning.
An unknown number of thugs gained entry through the window grills and stole electronic goods valued at Sh150,000.
The victim was rushed to Mama Lucy Kibaki Referral Hospital for medical treatment.
Police say they are looking for the gang behind the incident.
In Embali, Vihiga County, a 27-year-old woman was attacked and sexually assaulted in a robbery incident.
Police said they are looking for two suspects behind the incident that happened on Monday morning.
The gang stole the woman’s mobile phone.
Police said the victim was admitted in hospital in a stable condition.
