The officers under the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) were on a routine patrol in the area alongside their Haiti National Police (HNP) counterparts.
During the shootout, a truck which had been carjacked by the gang and used to block the road at Cazeau junction was intercepted.
It was later handed over to the owner after being secured at the police station.
“Expecting minimal resistance, the gang members were taken by surprise when the MSS/HNP team responded with overwhelming force, forcing them to flee with severe gunshot wounds,” a statement by MSS reads.
The officers have recently scaled up their operations in various parts of the city targeted at flushing out the gangs from their hideouts.
The successful operations have led to the establishment of Forward Operating Bases (FOB).
So far, three FOBs have been set up.
The latest one to be opened is at the General Inspectorate of the National Police of Haiti (IGPNH) building previously abandoned due to gang activities.
Others are at the National Police Academy and Pont-Sonde.
As part of its achievements, MSS has also managed to reopen several police stations which had been taken over by the gangs.
Meanwhile, there was joy Saturday as residents of Liancourt in Pont-Sonde gathered at the newly reopened Liancourt police station to celebrate and express their gratitude to the joint MSS/HNP team.
The reopening of the station, MSS said, marked a turning point, bringing an end to years of gang domination in the area.
“The celebratory event, filled with music and dancing, showcased the success of community policing, emphasising the importance of strong collaboration between law enforcement and the local population,” it said.
Kenyan police alongside those from Jamaica, Belize and Bahamas are in Haiti to help stabilize the country amid financial constraints.
The Kenyan team arrived in Haiti in June 2024 to help in containing the gangs. A week ago, gang leader Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Cherizier and his group were ordered to surrender following the sustained operations in their strongholds.
“The MSS issues a stern warning to gang leaders: surrender now or face the inevitable force that will strike them sooner than anticipated,” MSS said.
