Police in Garissa have intercepted 88 bags of suspected contraband sugar along the Modika-Modogashe Road.

The incident occurred in the early morning hours on Wednesday when the Border Police patrol team noticed two vehicles in the Nuno area of Garissa.

According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, upon engagement by police officers, the drivers attempted to flee, an action that prompted the Garissa-based officers to pursue the suspects.

“While on mobile patrol in the dead of the night, the officers spotted two suspicious Toyota Probox vehicles at Nuno area, but on approaching for a little chat with the occupants, the drivers revved up the engines in a desperate move to escape,” the DCI report said.

The police managed to immobilise the vehicles and conducted a search uncovering 88 bags of sugar each weighing 25kgs.

The two vehicles involved were also detained along with the sugar for further investigation by the relevant authorities.

The confiscated items are now awaiting verification by a multi-agency team to determine their legality and origin.

In a separate operation, Kimilili-based DCI detectives seized 120 bottles of suspected second-generation liquor in Bungoma County on December 3.

This was after detectives ambushed a motorist distributing the products.

The DCI revealed that the case had been handed over to a multi-agency team after police in Kimilili recorded the inventory of the questionable products.

The DCI cautioned the public to stay vigilant against unscrupulous liquor vendors who prioritise profit over the well-being of their customers as the festive season approaches.

Police have in the recent past intensified war against contraband goods and illicit alcohol.

In October, the DCI arrested two men and a woman for allegedly producing counterfeit alcohol in Nakuru.

According to DCI, officers seized 60 sacks of assorted bottle caps for different alcoholic brands, a plastic moulding machine, two and a half drums of ethanol, and various labels and stickers for the fake brands.

The recovered items were transported to the KRA warehouse in Nakuru, DCI said.
