The organisers of the Chepsaita Great Cross Country have announced a range of exciting prizes for the winners of this year’s event slated for Saturday.
The prestigious race, which is in its second edition has attracted over 10,000 athletes from across the country and 15 other foreign nations.
Dubbed ‘Run for Education’, the event under the patronage of President William Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet, promises to be a thrilling competition with top prizes that reflect its significance.
Athletics Kenya Director for Youth Development Barnabas Korir said winners in every category will receive substantial rewards including cash prizes, trophies and other valuable items.
Korir said they have set the prize money at Sh6 million.
The top three finishers in the senior men’s and women’s categories will walk away with Sh300,000, Sh250,000 and Sh150, 000 respectively.
Top 15 athletes in this category will also be rewarded. In the junior men’s and women’s category, the first three winners will get Sh60,000, Sh40,000 and Sh30,000 respectively with other athletes until position 30 also getting rewards.
Veterans who are above 46 years to 75 years will also receive prizes. The Great Run, known for its well-organised structure and competitive spirit, continues to grow in stature.
According to Korir, the number of those registered to participate surpassed their initial targets.
“For the first time we have made history in this country and I am sure because we have been participating in other races all over the world we have never had a turn-up that we have here,” Korir said.
With a focus on both elite competitors and community involvement, the event is set to become a highlight on the local sports calendar.
At least 10 schools from the surrounding area have been identified and will each receive Sh1 million as part of efforts to uplift education in the area.
At least 100 learners from humble backgrounds from these identified schools will each get Sh10,000 for their education.
Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge and 1,500m world record holder Faith Kipyegon are among the key figures expected at the event.
