Residents of Kathita village in Embu Town on Monday reacted with shock and grief after an elderly woman, in her 80's, passed away under harrowing circumstances.
According to neighbours, the deceased, Jacinta Wambugi Mwaniki, has for years been living a solitary life
and relied on the mercy of neighbours for her upkeep.
Area Assistant Chief, Jackson, Kamau confirmed the incident, recounting how villagers discovered her unconscious in her house, with her back already infested with maggots
Despite desperate efforts to save her, she passed away as they made arrangements to rush her to the hospital
According to the Assistant Chief, the granny had been sponsored by well-wishers to collect food from a local kiosk.
When a week passed without her being seen, concerned residents raised the alarm.
Acting on the concerns, Kamau mobilized villagers to check on her. They broke down the door to her hut and found her lying on the floor in a critical state.
It is said she had not eaten nor drunk anything for the whole week she kept indoors, which took a toll on her ailing health.
The residents attempted to clean her wounds and prepare her for transport to the hospital, but, she died before she could be moved to the hospital.
The body was later moved to Embu Level 5 Hospital mortuary.
