Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja celebrated as the Nairobi City County team was crowned overall champions at the 12th edition of the Kenya Inter-County Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) Games, held from November 24 to 30 in Kakamega County.

Governor Sakaja, brimming with pride, praised the team’s stellar performance, which secured a remarkable 24 medals, cementing Nairobi’s dominance in the competition.

“You have made us proud with your stellar performance and bagging 24 medals,” said Governor Sakaja during the celebration.

“I want to reassure you of my full support, especially through the ongoing stadia rehabilitation to international standards.”

The event brought together 35 counties, with Nairobi showcasing its prowess in various disciplines.

The city’s team, a blend of experienced athletes and emerging talent, demonstrated exceptional skill, resilience, and teamwork.

Their efforts yielded an impressive tally of 11 gold, 7 silver, and 6 bronze medals. The week-long competition featured a diverse array of sports and cultural activities, including athletics, football, volleyball, and choir performances.

Nairobi’s athletes excelled across the board, reaffirming the county’s position as a hub of talent and cultural innovation.

In the previous championship held in Meru, Nairobi claimed gold in darts, set pieces, table tennis, squash, badminton, men’s volleyball, men’s handball, women’s basketball, and netball. This consistent success underscores the city’s commitment to nurturing talent and promoting sports and cultural heritage.

As the county celebrates this year’s triumph, Governor Sakaja reiterated his dedication to supporting the team, with a focus on upgrading city stadia to meet international standards.

The KICOSCA Games serve as a vital platform for fostering unity and showcasing the rich cultural diversity of Kenya’s countries.

This year’s victory further solidifies Nairobi’s status as a leader in sports and cultural excellence.
