  • The construction of the ExpressWay started in 2019.

KeNHA has explained delays in completing a critical section of Mombasa Road, causing traffic congestion along the highway.

According to KeNHA, the delays are linked to adopting the Hand Packed Stone (HPS) technology in constructing the road’s sub-base.

"This labour-intensive method enhances the road’s structural integrity, ensuring taxpayers get value for money," the agency said.

It has added that work being undertaken includes tackling drainage challenges arising from the high percolation of water in the area.

To stabilize the wet ground, a rockfill base has been introduced to support the road's foundation, it said.

KeNHA added that the road’s surface will be reinforced with a layer of "dense bitumen macadam" and asphalt concrete to enhance its strength and resilience for future traffic loads.

Over the past week, motorists using the highway have been forced to endure heavy traffic congestion.

In some instances, others opted for the ExpressWay as an alternative route.

The agency has, however, not provided details on when the works are set to be concluded.

Following the completion of the ExpressWay, Mombasa Road has been under routine maintenance in a bid to repair the damaged sections.

The rehabilitation works along the highway which commenced April 26, 2023, is anticipated to be completed by April 25, 2025.

The then Roads and  Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen made the revelation when he appeared in Parliament.

The contract for the Nairobi Southern bypass interchange (Ole Sereni-Athi River Interchange (A8 ) stretch was awarded to M/S Wolf Paving Works Kenya Limited for Sh1.86 billion.

That of James Gichuru road junction-Nairobi Southern bypass interchange (Ole Sereni (A8) Road, Murkomen added, will be done by M/s Shovels N trowels limited to Sh1.19 billion.

The scope of works includes recarpeting, excavation and drainage system.

It also includes markings.

The construction of the ExpressWay started in 2019.

The 27-kilometre road was constructed by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) for Sh72.8 billion.
