Streets of Eldoret City have been turned into an open air market for hawkers and mitumba clothes traders after Governor Jonathan Bii allowed free sale Christmas offer for the traders.
The governor toured the city and mingled with residents and traders as he assured them of his administration's dedication to fostering a business-friendly environment in the region.
During a walk along Eldoret's bustling streets, Governor Bii interacted with traders currently benefiting from his directive to provide free business spaces in the city until January 3, 2025.
The initiative, he said, is aimed at boosting local businesses during the festive season.
“I encourage you to continue with your businesses as we work together to grow our economy. Your security and a conducive environment are guaranteed,” the governor remarked.
He further emphasised the importance of unity among communities, urging residents to avoid divisions along tribal lines and to work collaboratively for the county's prosperity.
The free business spaces initiative has been warmly welcomed by traders, who expressed gratitude for the support during the high-demand holiday season.
The traders are now selling all kinds of wares on the streets within the CBD.
Bii said the county was working closely with the security agencies to ensure round the clock safety for residents.
“We have enhanced our security and street lighting in most areas of the city and other parts of Uasin Gishu so that our people enjoy the Christmas and New Year festivities”, said Bii.
The traders led by Paul Keter and John Mburu asked the governor to consider a similar offer twice monthly.
“We are happy with the gesture from our governor considering that we have gone through tough economic times this year,” Mburu said.
He thanked the governor for ensuring that his county enforcement team is transformed into a friendly unit unlike previously when the county askaris harassed traders daily.
“We were used to running battles and fighting with the county askaris but we are happy that currently we work well with the county,” Mburu said.
Keter said the governor had helped to cultivate inter-community harmony in the city of Eldoret.
