World has lost beacon of hope, Passaris on Carter's death

Former US President Jimmy Carter 

Nairobi Woman Rep Esther Passaris on Monday said the world has lost “a true beacon of hope” following the demise of former US President Jimmy Carter.

In a tribute to the former president, Passaris said Carter was committed to service and humanity.

“President Carter's legacy as a humanitarian and peacemaker will continue to inspire us all, demonstrating that we each have the power to make a difference in the world,” she said.

Passaris added that Carter’s belief that "the bond of our common humanity is stronger than the divisiveness of our fears and prejudices" inspired countless individuals to pursue peace and justice.

“Nairobi City is one of the 36 beneficiary cities of the Inform Women, Transform Lives Campaign’ through the Carter Center, highlighting his dedication to empowering communities,” she said.

“Let us celebrate his memory by continuing his work in alleviating suffering and fostering unity. Our thoughts and prayers are with President Carter's family and the American people during this difficult time.”

Carter brokered peace between Israel and Egypt and later received the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work.

His son Chip Carter confirmed the former president had died in his Georgia home on Sunday.

The former peanut farmer served one term in the White House from 1977 to 1981 and dedicated the rest of his life to charity

Carter's wife of 77 years, Rosalynn, was by his side until her passing on November 19, 2023, aged 96.

At 100 years old, Carter was the longest-lived former president in America’s history.

In his tribute, earlier, President William Ruto said the world is indebted to his pioneering voice on the actions for a healthy planet that has protected our nature and slowed climate change. 

“Our thoughts and prayers are with President Carter’s family and the people of the United States of America. Rest In Peace,” he said.
