CRIME SCENE

A suspected thug was shot and killed in a failed robbery in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area.

A homemade gun was recovered from him, police said.

Police said the suspect and an accomplice had been targeting and robbing pedestrians on Muratina Road on Wednesday, January 1 morning when an alarm was raised.

The two had attacked a pedestrian walking to Al-Hidaya Mosque for prayers along Jam Street off Muratina Road when he raised an alarm.

The victim was robbed of his mobile phone at gunpoint prompting him to raise an alarm, which alerted police on patrol.

The police responded and briefly chased the two before shooting one of them dead.

According to the police the accomplice managed to escape with injuries and that a homemade gun capable of firing was recovered.

It is believed that the other robber escaped with the stolen mobile phone.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending identification and other procedures.

Police say they have increased patrols in the city and other urban areas to address cases of armed robberies, which may increase in the back-to-school season.

Cases of robberies are anticipated to increase in the coming weeks, and police warned and added that they have laid strategies to address the fears.

Meanwhile, two suspects were rescued and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after being attacked by a mob in a botched robbery in Dandora, Nairobi.

It was later alleged that he had attempted to rob an unknown pedestrian's mobile phone when an alarm was raised alerting a mob on New Year's Day at about 10 am.

The mob attacked the two with stones and sticks leaving them to death before police arrived to move them to hospital.

Police discourage mob lynching and term it criminal.

They want suspects to be surrendered to authorities for processing and prosecution.
