Against all odds: Brian Otucho from Kapsabet Boys High School scored an A of 84 points/HANDOUT
A student at Kapsabet Boys High School has rose against health challenges to score a straight A in the just released KCSE exam results.
He wants to be a pilot. Brian Otucho missed three consecutive academic terms in Form three because of the illness.
Otucho was diagnosed with a mental illness that took a toll on his health, forcing him to drop out of school for some time.
According to his mother, Consalia Otucho, Brian exhibited symptoms of confusion and was not able to concentrate or keep up with the rigorous school routine. He, however, surprised his parents and teachers with the striking performance.
"As a family we feared because of the setback, but now we are in celebrating because of his results," said the mother.
Brian scored an A grade of 84 points
“We thank God for the good performance," she said.
Chief Principal Kipchumba Maiyo said Brian was a very brilliant student who was always among the best.
"His condition worried all of us but we are happy he has done well," said the principal.
Psychiatrist Zaccius Rop said mental illness was a condition that is treatable and thanked Brian for rising above the challenge.
He thanked Brian's parents and teachers calling on other members of the community to treat cases of mental illness like any other disease that can be tackled by medics.
Teachers at the school thanked Brian for the Stirling performance in the exams.
"We always ask our students to focus on their studies and aim for the best," a teacher at the school said.
Kapsabet Boys is among the top performing schools nationally and was expected to post great results with many As.
Maiyo said they had challenges downloading the results but hoped for very good performance by last year’s candidates
