PSC nominees face MPs in full-day exercise

They are required to appear with their original identity cards, academic and professional certificates.

The National Assembly’s Committee on Labor will today (Thursday) hold a grilling session for the seven nominees to the Public Service Commission (PSC), including Mary Kimonye, who has been nominated as vice-chairperson.

The full-day vetting exercise is scheduled to start at 8am with Kimonye being the first to appear before the committee, chaired by Runyenjes MP Eric Karemba.

The vetting process comes ahead of expected vacancies in the PSC’s vice-chairperson and member posts, set to occur in mid-January and April 2025.

Kimonye previously served as the Principal Secretary in the State Department for Public Service in the Jubilee administration.

According to a schedule released by National Assembly Clerk Samuel Njoroge, each nominee will be given an hour to present themselves to the committee.

Following Kimonye’s appearance, Harun Hassan will follow at 9:45am, Mwanamaka Amani at 11 am and ex-NTSA chairperson Francis Meja at 12pm.

The afternoon session will feature Irene Asienga at 2 pm, ex-IEBC commissioner Boya Molu at 3pm, Joan Machayo at 4:15 pm, and Francis Otieno at 5 pm.

The nominees are required to appear with their original identity cards, academic and professional certificates and other relevant testimonials.

They are also expected to obtain letters or certificates of compliance from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Kenya Revenue Authority, Higher Education Loans Board, Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Office of the Registrar of Political Parties and Credit Reference Bureau.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has already recalled the MPs from the recess for the sitting.

In a notice dated January 8, Wetang’ula stated that his decision to recall the MPs follows a request made by the National Assembly’s Leader of majority Kimani Ichung’wah.

“Now therefore, it is hereby notified to all members of the National Assembly and the general public that Thursday, 16th January 2025 has been appointed as a day for special sittings of the National Assembly,” reads the notice.

The sittings will be held in the morning and afternoon.

The MPs will also consider a report on the vetting of three new cabinet secretaries-Mutahi Kagwe, Lee Kinyanjui and William Kabogo during the sitting.
