President William Ruto, Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula, Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi, Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka and other key leaders in Cheptais, Mt Elgon for a church service on Sunday, January 19, 2025.
President William Ruto showcased his musical side on Sunday by leading a worship song during a service in Cheptais Boys High School, Mt Elgon Constituency, Bungoma County.
President Ruto was invited to the podium by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula. As the choir began singing, Ruto paused them briefly to address the congregation.
“Ngojea kidogo (wait a little bit),” he said, before delivering his message.
"Bwana Yesu asifiwe, pastor amesema turudi kwa Mungu, turudishe mawazo yetu, mipango yetu kwa Mungu. Na pia, mnajua tumetengeneza serikali broad based, na mimi naon hapa, nyinyi mmetengeneza maombi, mtu atuweke hio wimbo."
It loosely translates to, "“Bwana Yesu asifiwe! The pastor has reminded us to return to God, to refocus our thoughts and plans on Him. As you know, we have established a broad-based government, and I see here that you have created broad-based prayers. Someone put that song for us,” he said.
The congregation then joined him in singing a Swahili hymn:
"...Bwana u,sehemu yangu, rafiki yangu wewe, katika safari yangu, natembea na wewe, pamoj na wewe, pamoja na wewe, katika safari yangu, twatembea na wewe...Niongoze safarini.."
The Head of State later quoted a Bible verse: 'And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus' (Philippians 4:7).
Prime CS Musalia Mudavad, Speaker Wetang'ula, Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka, senators, and several members of the National Assembly were also present.
Leaders present rallied the region behind President Ruto's government saying they will push his agenda to the grassroots regions.
The church service in Bungoma came a few days after ANC folded up to merge with the UDA party in a key rebranding strategy ahead of the 2027 elections.
