The Registrar of Political Parties has gazetted UDA's intended removal of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as the deputy party leader.

In a gazette notice dated January 23, Anne Nderitu notified of the intention by UDA to replace Gachagua with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

"Any person with written submissions concerning the intended change by the political party shall within seven (7) days from the date of this publication, make their written submissions to the Registrar of Political Parties,'' the notice reads.

UDA had this week notified its members and the general public of its intention to formally remove  Gachagua as its deputy party leader and replace him with his successor Kindiki.

The notice came just days after the ruling party announced its merger with the Amani National Congress (ANC) and incorporated some of its leaders into its leadership structure.

The notice published Thursday in the Star newspaper was signed by national chairperson Cecily Mbarire and Secretary General Hassan Omar.

"Pursuant to and in accordance with Section 20 (2) of the Political Parties Act, 2011, the United Democratic Alliance Party notifies its members and the general public of the following changes in the office of the Deputy Party Leader on an interim basis,” the notice dated January 22.

After the registrar of parties ratified the resolution, first reached on November 11 by UDA’s national executive committee (NEC), Gachagua ceased to be the party's deputy leader.

The NEC had resolved to remove Gachagua based on the UDA constitution, which says the deputy party leader should also serve as deputy president.

Gachagua's impeachment on October 17 on multiple grounds, including insubordination to party boss President William Ruto, triggered his ouster as the party’s second-in-command

Ruto appointed Kindiki as deputy president immediately after the Senate overwhelmingly upheld the National Assembly’s decision to impeach the former Mathira MP.

Gachagua, however, moved to court to challenge his impeachment.

A three-judge bench is expected to be used this Thursday to mention the case in which over 30 petitions have been filed.

In October last year, UDA top officials had indicated that the party would consider expelling Gachagua altogether should the court uphold his impeachment.
