In Kibiku, Kabete, Kiambu County, a resident said he stumbled on human bones on his piece of land.
The bones were floating in a pool of water streaming from Mweteta River that snakes through the area.
The resident told police he was watering his farm from the river when he saw the decomposed body of a woman.
Police who visited the scene said the victim was a woman and that the head had been detached from the main body.
The body had decomposed beyond recognition and was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and identification.
Police want those whose female relative is missing to visit the City Mortuary to help in efforts to solve the matter.
Detectives handling the case said they are for now open to various theories including drowning and murder.
Elsewhere, a man was shot and killed in Kamechu village, Tigania, Meru County.
