Housing and Urban Development PS Charles Hinga has urged Kenyans living abroad to take advantage of the Affordable Housing Project to own decent homes.
Hinga said the Affordable Housing Programme remains the best investment for Diaspora people.
Addressing Kenyans living in Egypt at a Cairo hotel, the PS said the government was committed to transforming slums in the country into estates.
He regretted that 70 per cent of Kenyans are living in slums in the country, saying the Affordable Housing Project will address challenges faced by the majority of Kenyans on issues of housing.
He said the issue has been compounded by the fact that land is becoming too expensive in Nairobi among other parts of the country.
"The construction of the Affordable houses will help many ordinary Kenyans access decent homes especially social housing for low-income earners," said Hinga.
He told the diaspora people that it was no longer the preserve of a few people in Kenya to own houses because of the Affordable Housing Project.
"We are now fixing a problem that has not been addressed 60 years ago. With the Affordable Housing Project, ordinary Kenyans can now own decent homes unlike in the past when it was only the preserve of a few in the society," said Hinga.
The PS noted that apart from providing decent homes, affordable housing will spur economic growth and offer jobs to thousands of Kenyans.
He said the affordable housing project has been proven to create a multiplier effect, where direct and indirect benefits to the country include job creation, improved health and safety and increased household resilience.
Hinga was part of a delegation that accompanied President William Ruto on a State visit to the country.
According to Ruto, the affordable housing programme has made significant strides, with 4,800 on sale and 1,080 social units ready for occupation.
"More than 124,000 units are also under construction, creating gainful employment to over 250,000 youth," he said.
The PS also praised Kenyans abroad for the contributions they make to the country’s economy.
He told them to be good ambassadors of their nation, saying Kenyans outside the country are well known for their hardwork and discipline.
David Obayo, an investor in Cairo, praised Hinga for his tireless efforts to ensure the successful implementation of the Affordable Housing Project.
"Bwana PS, you have been vocal and consistent in helping President William Ruto in ensuring the successful implementation of this Affordable Housing Project. You have always educated Kenyans on the importance of embracing this project whenever you have the opportunity to do so," said Obayo.
He urged Kenyans living abroad to take advantage of the affordable housing project and own decent homes.
Ruto and his team also had an opportunity to visit the new Capital Gardens City in Cairo where 1.027 million housing units have been built in under four years.
