Uasin Gishu county has issued notices to residents living in areas where more Affordable Housing units are to be developed in Eldoret city.

The county, through its housing department, issued three-month notices to tenants in old county houses at Kidiwa asking them to vacate.

More than 1,000 people will be affected in the latest evictions, where the government plans to develop Phase Two of the Kidiwa site.

This comes as the initiative nears completion, with workers putting final touches on some of the units at the Kidiwa Affordable Housing project.

The units are expected to be completed by the end of March, as Governor Jonathan Bii said the projects will change the face of the city.

The projects provide an opportunity for residents to buy their own house at an affordable cost, he added, while underscoring the project’s benefits.

“We are excited with the Affordable Housing projects in Eldoret city because they have offered job opportunities for thousands of our people,” the governor said.

Elijah Kiambati from the Jua Kali sector agreed with Bii’s sentiments, saying the project has offered many jobs to youth.

Kiambati, who is among those issued with the latest notices, said the projects are beneficial and he will vacate as directed.

“We have seen the benefits of the housing projects and we should not resist such development,” the resident said.

Phase One of the project employed over 1,000 people, most of them from the Jua Kali sector.

“We have many youths especially women who got jobs in the Kidiwa phase one and are now earning a living from these projects,” Kiambati said.

Completion of the project will be a major achievement for President William Ruto.

“We thank President Ruto for this initiative because it’s just like the government has employed us and through this we have many other openings in the construction sector,” he said.

The Kidiwa project has 3-, 2- and 1-bedroom units, with studio units being the lowest priced at about Sh960,000.
