Nelson Makanda elected IEBC selection panel chair

Members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Selection Panel have elected Dr Nelson Makanda as the chairperson.

The IEBC Selection Panel further elected Lindah Kiome as the Vice Chairperson.

“For the next 85 days or less, we, as the Selection Panel, have undertaken to ensure that we deliver on our mandate of giving Kenyans the next chairperson and members of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission,” Makanda said.

Makanda noted that the IEBC Act provides that the selection panel shall, within seven days of its appointment, invite applications from qualified persons and publish the names of all applicants and their qualifications in the gazette, two newspapers of national circulation and on the website of the Parliamentary Service Commission.

“In this regard, the panel shall, tomorrow, February 1, 2025, invite applications from qualified Kenyans for the positions of chairperson and members of the IEBC,” he stated.

He assured Kenyans that the Selection Panel is committed to conducting the recruitment exercise in an impartial, fair and transparent manner.

“I also want to take this opportunity to extend my sincere gratitude to the media for the support they have given the Panel, it is through the 4th Estate that the public can hold us to account as we dispense our duty,” he added.

Makanda said Kenyans can rely on the media to get updates on the process.

“The panel will continuously issue updates to the country on the progress of this exercise,” he stated.

He encouraged qualified Kenyans to send in their applications.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act, Cap. 7C provides for the composition of the Selection Panel comprising nine members.

Members include two persons nominated by the Parliamentary Service Commission, representing the majority party or coalition of parties and the minority party or coalition of parties; three persons nominated by the Political Parties Liaison Committee, one person nominated by the Law Society of Kenya; one person nominated by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya; and two persons nominated by the Inter-religious Council of Kenya.

On January 27, 2025, by Gazette Notice No. 715, President William Ruto appointed the members of the Selection Panel.

On the same day, members of the Selection Panel took and subscribed to the oath or affirmation of office before Chief Justice Martha Koome as prescribed under the Third Schedule of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act.
