Deputy president Prof Kithure Kindiki on Friday commissioned a rural electrification project at Aguthi Village in Kieni constituency, Nyeri County, connecting 101 residents to electricity.
The DP was flanked by Energy PS Alex Wachira and several members of parliament from Nyeri County.
The project, implemented by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Corporation (REREC), is expected to breathe life into agricultural and economic activities in this sleepy village.
In Kieni Constituency, Sh164 million has been allocated to connect 1,163 households, including 101 homes in Aguthi Village.
Residents, including 73-year-old Lydia Wairimu, are now engaging in chicken rearing more efficiently, thanks to the power connection.
Kindiki promised the residents that the government was keen to connect 10,000 Nyeri residents to electricity this year.
He said the government will connect more than one million customers to the national grid in the next 20 months in the last-mile connectivity program underway across the 290 constituencies.
This will raise the number of households connected to electricity from 2.5 million in 2013 to 9 million in 2025.
In Nyeri County, Sh733 million has been allocated for more connections this year.
