The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has regained control of its X and Facebook accounts following a cyber-attack that saw the page land in the hands of hackers.

The attack on the DCI page is the latest of many others that have hit high-profile social media accounts in the last few weeks.

Kenyans were shocked after information related to cryptocurrency and blockchain scams was posted on the pages on Sunday, sending clear signals that they were under the control of hackers.

But in a swift response, the DCI team managed to wrestle back the account from the hands of hackers after which they made a statement regarding the matter.

“For some moment this evening, we experienced a cyber-attack on the DCI digital platforms (X and Facebook), but have since regained full control,” DCI said.

Consequently, the DCI boss has cautioned Kenyans to disregard the message posted earlier on the page regarding cryptocurrency and blockchain describing them as fake.

The directorate said they have intensified the probe into the matter and will hold those responsible accountable.

“Note: The information is therefore FAKE and not from the DCI. A scrupulous interrogation into the criminal activity has been activated to bring to book the perpetrators,” DCI said.

The hacking incident comes just a week after Kenya Broadcasting Channel (KBC) revealed that it was a victim of a cyber attack.

The attack left its X account in the hands of hackers who renamed it ''Deepseek AI.''

''KBC Channel 1's X account was compromised and we are actively working to restore full access. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and advise caution when engaging with recent posts from the account,'' KBC said.

They have since recovered the account.

Another attack faced K24 TV which was hacked last week and saw the page renamed severally.

The page has since been given its original name but previous posts seem to have been deleted.

The profile picture, however, is yet to be updated to its earlier status.
