Homa Bay has been ranked as the best-performing county in healthcare, while Murang’a excelled in agriculture, according to a 2024 survey by pollster Infotrak.

The survey, released on Tuesday, placed Governor Gladys Wanga’s Homa Bay County at the top of the health sector rankings with a score of 53 per cent, making it the best-performing county in the execution of health functions.

Homa Bay moved from second place in 2023 to claim the top spot in 2024.

However, its score dropped by four percentage points from the previous year, when it had achieved 57 per cent while still ranking first.

Irungu Kang'ata's Murang’a County came in second in the health category with a score of 52 per cent, an impressive improvement from its eighth-place ranking in 2023.

Despite moving up six positions, the county retained the same score of 52 per cent.

The rankings also showed that Murang’a was the best-performing county in agriculture, scoring 51 per cent.

This was a decline from its 56 percent score in 2023 when it ranked eighth nationally.

Murang’a tied for first place in agriculture with Trans Nzoia County, while Elgeyo Marakwet and Homa Bay shared third place with a score of 50 per cent.

In the health category, Kirinyaga County ranked third with 46 per cent, tying with Nyeri, Kisii, Trans Nzoia, and Kisumu.

Tharaka Nithi, Makueni, and Kiambu tied for seventh place with 45 per cent, while Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Migori shared 11th place with 44 per cent.

The survey asked respondents to rate their counties’ performance across various sectors using a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 represented extremely poor performance and 10 represented excellence.

The county government's performance in healthcare was assessed based on its efforts to provide affordable medical treatment, ensure county health facilities were well-equipped with medical personnel, equipment, and medicine, and address residents' health concerns effectively.

Additional evaluation criteria included access to public health information, disease prevention efforts, and the availability of adequate sanitation facilities, such as pit latrines and public toilets.

The survey was conducted between October and December 2024 across all 47 counties, with a sample size of 39,795 respondents.

Data collection was carried out through Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviews (CATI) and analyzed using SPSS.

The questionnaire applied a 1–10 Likert scale for each indicator, where 1 represented very poor performance and 10 represented excellence.

The mean score for each sub-indicator within the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) was calculated to determine the index for each KPI.

The overall county performance index was then computed as an average of the KPIs.
