Borabu Member of Parliament Patrick Osero is now demanding answers on circumstances under which a police officer was killed by bandits in Baragoi, Samburu County.

Police Constable Humphrey Oroba Angwenyi, who hails from the Isoge Settlement Scheme in Borabu Sub County, Nyamira County, was killed during an ambush on Monday evening.

Oroba was driving a police vehicle transporting eight prisoners from Maralal GK Prison to Baragoi police station and was in the company of two police officers who escaped unhurt.

All the eight remandees escaped in the ambush.

Osero while speaking on the matter questioned why only three officers were deployed to escort the eight suspects yet the area is highly volatile.

"These officers were set up. Someone could have slept on his job or deliberately facilitated a lapse to ensure the suspects escaped," the MP said.

Osero is now calling on Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to provide answers to the family of the deceased officer.

"The family is in agony. Other than the police signal that had been circulating, no one has briefed the family on the whereabouts of the body of the deceased or how he was killed," he added.

Gunmen who were waiting opened fire and killed Oroba on the spot forcing his colleagues to seek refuge in a bush.

The body of Oroba was found at the scene with multiple bullet wounds with his AK47 rifle with 30 bullets missing.

The two officers with the eight remandees were missing, a team that responded to the scene said.

More police officers responded to the scene and staged a search before finding the missing colleagues with their firearms.

The suspects were however missing.

Police said five of the suspects were facing charges of defilement, one had a case of illegal possession of a firearm and another was facing murder and robbery charges.

The eighth suspect was facing assault and grievous harm charges.

Police said on Tuesday no arrest had been made on the attackers and those who escaped.

The assailants are suspected to have known the movements of the team before staging the deadly attack and freedom of the remandees.

The body of the deceased officer was moved to Baragoi Sub County Hospital Morgue pending autopsy.

More personnel have been mobilised to hunt down the gunmen, police headquarters said.

The area is among those under ongoing Operation Maliza Uhalifu North Rift.

The operation has led to a general decline in banditry attacks in the larger north rift and other surrounding areas in the past year.
