The approval follows separate nomination letters submitted to the Clerk of the National Assembly by the leader of the majority party Kimani Ichung’wa and his counterpart from the minority Junet Mohamed.
Those from the Kenya Kwanza are Omboko Milema (Emuhaya), Faith Gitau (Nyandarua woman representative), Samuel Chepkonga (Ainabkoi), Joshua Mbithi (Masinga) and Umul Ker Kassim (Mandera woman representative).
Robert Mbui (Kathiani), Tom Kajwang (Ruaraka), Adan Keynan (Eldas) and Sarah Korere (Laikipia North) will represent the minority side.
Leaders of both the Majority Party and the Minority Party, and the Whips of both parties are also members of the committee.
The Committee, chaired by the Speaker is charged with planning business to be transacted by the House.
Following their approval, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula directed the committee members to convene immediately to plan the House’s agenda.
“I direct all Members of the House Business Committee to meet this afternoon and schedule the business of the House," Wetang’ula stated.
In response to the move by the members from the minority side to storm out of the House following the ruling that affirmed the Kenya Kwanza’s majority status, Wetang’ula reminded the members that names as submitted and approved remain unchanged.
“Once a motion is moved, you can either move an amendment seeking the necessary support from the House that shall be put to a vote or keep your cool. You do not change the content of the motion by picketing on the floor of the House and making statements that are completely unpalatable,” he stated.
The motion was moved by Ichung’wah and seconded by Keynan.
He added:
“We have a greater duty to the people of Kenya than the shenanigans that we want to display here.”
The statement by the speaker came after Junet said they had withdrawn their members from their side.
"Mr Speaker, it will a nullity for the House to pass membership from our side. Now you can consider me as the majority or minority, whichever way you want, “ he said in protest.
The House Business Committee, established under Standing Order 171, is responsible for setting the agenda of the National Assembly.
Its mandate includes preparing and adjusting the Parliamentary Calendar with the House's approval and monitoring and overseeing the implementation of House business and programs.
It is also charged with implementing Standing Orders related to the scheduling or programming of House business and the functioning of its Committees.
